Times with the
Grateful Dead
I had a special relationship with this group of musical adventurers, which spanned from rapt fan to employee. My path, like so many others who came for the show, had its own take on the entire event. I sought the conventional images of the boys, but I also tried to capture the bigger image of what was happening in the entire community and what the impact of music was on individuals. I wanted to highlight people’s experiences and connect them with how they were transformed.
I enjoyed the unconventional perspective of wide shots, ones in the aisles or created on top of scaffolding, which is more representational of what a person feels and sees in a crowd. The Grateful Dead inspired me to create visual representation of sonic energy and Candace Brightman, their Lighting Designer, taught me how to work with color.
There is much more to say and share about these experiences and images. Someday you may see the book I have been working on about this experience. Enjoy.
